Path of the Tiber River
This is a 20km route along the banks of the Tiber departing from the bridge over the river in Citta’ di Castello, where the headquarters of the local canoe club are located. From here, you can take canoe trips with professional guides and the most experienced can rent canoes and gear to descend the river themselves. The route along the river banks is quite accessible, suitable for all ages and not particularly hard; various sections of this track are shaded by trees. Given its torrential character, occasionally the river has a limited flow, while other times, especially during the rainy season, the water level increases considerably. From Citta’ di Castello, the starting point, you can see the cluster of towers and bell towers overlooking the historic center of town as well as its perimeter walls. Once you reach the village of Selci, near the football field, you will spot a sign pointing to another trail leading to the “Path of Pliny”, which brings you to the village of Pitigliano. Follow the track to the bridge over the Tiber of Pristino; here you can leave the trail and continue to San Giustino, where you will see the battlements of the old Bufalini Castle. Continue towards Celalba and ride back to the village of Pitigliano, where you can visit the old ruins of the villa of Pliny the Younger; crossing the village of Lama, continue along the road at the foot of the hills, where you will see the villages of Grumale and Badiali with their ancient churches. Once you reach the complex now housing the hospital, where you can enjoy a nice view of town, head back to the starting point in Citta’ di Castello.
