Grifani Donati Typography
The Grifani Donati Typography was established in 1799 and is the only remaining example of an old printing works in Città di Castello so it is an important part of the cultural heritage of the town. There has been a local printing industry since the sixteenth century and the Museo delle Arti Grafiche gives us the chance to rediscover the traditional printing methods. The printing industry is still important for the economy of the area. In 1799 Francesco Donati and Bartolomeo Carlucci left Assisi and moved to Città di Castello where they opened a workshop above the thirteenth century church of St Paul’s. It has been in the family now for over 200 years and has been enlarged to include stone lithography, book-binding and restoration. It is a valuable point of reference for all these craftsmen who want to use traditional techniques such as lithography, xylography, etching, dry point and linocuts, when printing their works. There are machines from various periods in full working order and interesting exhibitions are held from time to time.
