Città di Castello and surroundings

Cathedral

It has Romanesque origins even though in its present form it is a Renaissance building. On the side staircase -18th century - you can admire the beautiful late Gothic portal. Inside, the coffered ceiling was built in 1699, while the dome was rebuilt in 1789, after an earthquake that destroyed it. The walls of the presbytery depicting episodes of the life of San Florido, to whom the Cathedral is dedicated, were painted by Marco Benefial in the years 1747-49.

Church of San Francesco
The interior has a single nave in the form of a Latin cross and was consecrated in 1291. Over the centuries it has undergone remarkable changes, especially in the 18th century when it was converted into baroque form. On the altar belonging to the Albizzini family, where is now a copy, there was the Sposalizio della Vergine painted by Raffaello in 1504, now in the Pinacoteca of Brera in Milan.

Church of San Domenico
The church was consecrated in 1426 and has a large structure with a nave with ceiling trusses. On the walls are frescoes of the 15th century by Sienese and Marchean school. The two chapels on the sides of the main altar once guarded both Raffaello's Crucifixion Gavari (or Mond) of 1503 and today at the National Gallery of London, and Luca Signorelli's (1498) Martiro di San Sebastiano now kept in the Municipal Picture Gallery. In the greater altar is preserved the body of Beata Margherita (1287-1320) a Dominican tertiary, called the "Blind of Metola".

Our Lady of Grace Sanctuary
The Gothic church was built between 1363 and 1381. & nbsp; Inside there is a table depicting the Our Lady of Grace, painted in 1456 by Giovanni da Piamonte, follower of Piero della Francesca and the fresco Dormitio Virginis, attributed to Ottaviano Nelli.

Church of Santa Maria Maggiore
T
he church was built by Niccolò Vitelli between 1483 and 1509. The interior has a rectangular plan with three naves divided by cross pillars. The church retains paintings by contemporary artists of Città di Castello - Bruschetti, Riguccini and Sarteanesi.
